Here is a just-in-time reminder to all those who, in the new Obama era of global co-existence, seem ready to abandon the notion that the United States and its allies are engaged in a global war against radical Islamic terrorism.
As revealed by a recent spate of attacks on Western aid workers, the terrorists are not only out for the blood of American soldiers. They are not simply seeking to repel American "imperialism." They are hellbent on destroying any semblance, no matter how benign, of Western civilization and international cooperation. The sooner we wake up to that reality, the better.
This month, a man disguised as a Pakistani soldier entered the Islamabad offices of the UN World Food Program, claiming a need to use the toilet. Seconds later, he detonated a bomb that immolated five relief workers. Among his victims were the compound's female greeter and another woman who organized food convoys.
It was but the latest incident in a disturbing trend of attacks on aid workers. In June, Pakistani militants bombed a hotel in which two UN staffers were killed and many more were wounded. In November, Islamists murdered American aid worker Stephen VancePeshawar, Pakistan. in broad daylight on the streets of Peshawar, Pakistan.
