How Tories Can Lead the Revival of Britain

At the end of last Wednesday's column, I suggested that it was time for our elected representatives to start thinking very hard about how we rebuild Britain. I was also struck by an observation from a colleague that if one enters a bookshop in America, it is full of books on how to get that country off its knees. If one enters a shop in Britain, it is full of books about our glorious past. Perhaps we cannot bear to think about the future. However, we must.

The fashion is to discuss whether or not we shall have a minority government after the election. I have no idea, though I have long thought it likely. Why is it that, after the disaster over which this administration has presided, there should still be any doubt about Labour being thrashed? The Conservatives, thinking wishfully as always, say that it is because the electoral system favours Labour. Perhaps it does. But what also favours the incumbents is the Opposition's lack of clarity not merely about what to do, but about what is most wrong.
