Last Saturday evening I was the speaker at the Christmas dinner of the North East Somerset Conservative Association. I sit as an independent peer in the House of Lords, but allow myself to support members of my family, and this is the seat for which our son Jacob is standing.
I was flattered that there was a record turnout for the Christmas dinner, which was held in the village hall of Farmborough, a village outside Bath. No fewer than 130 people turned up, there was an overflow table and a waiting list. Jacob is a popular candidate. People are not bored with politics.
I was the object of friendly jokes, based on the press coverage of Annunziata’s name and the suggestion she might change it to Nancy Mogg. My daughter is the candidate for the neighbouring seat of Somerton and Frome, and she is not going to change her name. I was asked whether I would become Bill Mogg — a joke that had already been made to me in the House of Lords.
