Channel Crossing the Old Fashioned Way

Anyone reading the accounts of the recent sorry goings-on in the Channel Tunnel could be forgiven for thinking that the world as we know it had come to an end. This is not to belittle the experiences of the thousands who found themselves trapped deep beneath the sea with insufficient information, woefully inadequate customer support and in extremely unsavoury conditions. But the breakdowns have served to underline just how dependent we have become on this way of getting to France since it first became possible in 1994. To paraphrase one of the greatest newspaper headlines of all times: "Ice in Channel Tunnel; Continent cut off."
