When does feeling down and blue become clinical depression? Well, first of all, you can be diagnosed as suffering from a major depressive disorder without actually feeling sad at all.
Major depression, in terms of symptoms, is highly variable. Current diagnostic systems suggest that anhedonia (the inability to experience pleasure) could replace dysphoria (a state of feeling ill at ease) as the essential diagnostic symptom. People experiencing anhedonia basically stop getting a buzz from things they once enjoyed, and they don’t have much appetite for new, potentially pleasurable, experiences either.
