Two former Cabinet ministers launched a damaging last-ditch attempted putsch against Gordon Brown today.
Geoff Hoon, the former Defence Secretary, and Patricia Hewitt, the former Health Secretary, have written to all Labour MPs calling for the leadership issue to be sorted out "once and for all" with a secret ballot among Labour MPs.
A source close to the former ministers, both of whom were allies of Tony Blair, said: "We can’t go on like this."
The timing of the attack – just before the first Prime Minister’s Questions of the new year – was intended to be devastating. It comes ahead of a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party, probably next Monday, which is widely thought to be the last chance Labour MPs will have to initiate a change of leader before the election.
