On the first Friday in May, David Cameron will be driven to Buckingham Palace to be appointed prime minister. Or will he? The British general election is almost certainly going to be held on May 6, and until weeks ago the result seemed equally certain. But as anyone could find at the party’s spring conference in Brighton last weekend, Mr Cameron’s Conservatives are now jittery. Can they really do it? Or even if they win the most seats, can they win an absolute parliamentary majority?
