When Iraqis cast their votes in Sunday’s election, they will be doing much more than merely deciding who is to lead their country for the next four years: they will be having a say in the outcome of a bitter struggle for regional primacy between Iran and the United States.
Washington and Tehran increasingly appear on course for a showdown over Iranian nuclear ambitions, with the United States and its Middle East allies – among them Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states – all deeply troubled by the prospect of atomic weapons in Persian hands.
