As eve-of-battle speeches go, the PM's podcast failed to thrill. Where Henry V promised that each Agincourt survivor would "strip his sleeve and show his scars", Gordon Brown confined his injury references to Wayne Rooney's minor ligament damage.
The economy, he suggested, required the care befitting Mr Rooney's ankle. Sceptics might prefer to compare Labour's hopes to Arsenal captain Cesc Fàbregas's leg. If not broken, the Government's campaign has taken a pounding. "We've had a bad week," says one Brown strategist. "And the Tories are on a roll."
