All Clegg Does Is Help Gordon Brown

"Are we entering an era of three-party politics?", people started asking yesterday. On Thursday night, Nick Clegg understood that the TV debate rules, idiotically agreed by the two main parties, gave him a unique advantage. He seized it. "Don't let anyone tell you that the only choice is the old politics," was the shameless pitch of the leader of a party whose politics are so old that it last won a general election in 1910.

There is a market for this sort of thing. A poll shortly before the debate reported that 32 per cent would like a hung Parliament: that is roughly 50 per cent more than the people who say they will vote for the Liberal Democrats.
