Military Looms over Thai Conflict

For a surprise military operation, Thailand’s 2006 coup was a poorly kept secret. Hours before the coup was even announced there were reports that the First Infantry Division, stationed in Bangkok, was mobilising in support of the government. The fear of an outright battle on the streets faded that night when the division’s commander gave up, and the next day the coup was declared bloodless. The only acknowledged casualty was a taxi driver who drove his car into a tank 10 days later in apparent protest.
