Nick Clegg has been saying for months that he’d dance across the studio in a pink tutu for a place in the leaders’ TV debate. In the end he didn’t have to put on the ballet gear but he was right to judge that this was his big chance.
Treated — for the first time — as an equal to Gordon Brown and David Cameron, he triumphed, stealing the mantle of change from the Tory leader. At his first Prime Minister’s Questions in 2005, Mr Cameron told Tony Blair: “You were the future once.” Now, as one Shadow Cabinet minister ruefully points out, Mr Clegg could say the same to him.
