In America, a funny man called Jon Stewart presents a programme called The Daily Show on television. Last week, he gave his account of the British election campaign. Stewart focused on the moment when Mr Brown, live on The Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2, hears himself describing Mrs Gillian Duffy as a "bigoted woman". "You actually see the moment," said Stewart, "when a man's political career leaves his body."
I am surprised there has not been more analysis of exactly how this happened. There are so many layers which make this episode the quintessential modern media event.
