The gloves came off in the election campaign today as the Conservatives responded angrily to Labour calls for anti-Tory tactical voting.
Even though Gordon Brown distanced himself from the rearguard action as he set off on a 36-hour tour of Britain, at least two Cabinet heavyweights suggested that Labour and the Liberal Democrats should effectively pool votes in key marginals on Thursday to stop the Tories getting in.
