Pay to Save Afghan Democracy?

Call it Afghan freakonomics — this week’s blog is frankly a thought experiment, in which I invite economics-minded readers to participate. Maybe some of you will be able to take this idea further — we certainly need some new approaches in Afghanistan.

In my past entry I quoted an American commander who explained that Afghans are happy to be paid to vote for a parliamentary candidate because they think his wealth shows he’d be a powerful representative of their interests.
