'Brokeback Coalition' Too Cozy for UK's Right

The new leader and his deputy walked in side by side. Their procession was, an observer wrote, "like a gay wedding". But that was almost 25 years ago. The happy couple were Neil Kinnock and Roy Hattersley, Labour's new leadership team, facing the media together for the first time in 1987. The joke didn't stick: Kinnock was balding, Hattersley portly, and the idea incongruous.
