Is the European Union ready for the break-up of Sudan? EU officials and diplomats from the member states have no doubt that a referendum in the south scheduled for January will produce an overwhelming majority in favour of independence from the north. There is also no question that the EU's member states will accept a declaration of independence that is based on a popular referendum that formed part of a political process that began with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) of 2005.
