Who says politics is boring? Welfare, social housing, the health service, schools and the police – all preparing for major reform, and all within the UK government’s first 100 days. In a couple of months George Osborne, the chancellor of the exchequer, may choose to misquote Denis Healey (a once prominent Labour politician) as he squeezes public services until the pips squeak. Former Labour ministers are in shock, faced with the demolition of extensions to the state that took 13 years to build. But as the bulldozers approach, the public looks on with equanimity. At home at least, prime minister David Cameron has looked sure-footed.
