Two news items this week focused attention on China’s status as the rising – and potentially threatening – global power. On Monday it was announced that China had overtaken Japan to become the world’s second biggest economy, a staging post for its eventual bypassing of the US.
The next day, the US military lamented China’s lack of openness about its military build-up, saying that this could lead to misunderstandings and miscalculations in a dangerous part of the world. The Pentagon report asked what was the purpose of China acquiring a high-seas navy, including an aircraft carrier, increasingly accurate long-range missiles and the capability to shoot down satellites.
