In an exciting political showdown, the race for the leadership of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan is pitting two men against each other who have marked differences in their visions of the nation, policies and ways of party management.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan, whose base is in Tokyo, started out as a grass-roots civic activist. Ichiro Ozawa, former DPJ secretary-general, comes from rural Iwate Prefecture and made his name as the protege of the late Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, who led a major faction of the Liberal Democratic Party.
