The Manila hostage crisis, in which eight Hong Kong residents, including three Canadian citizens, were killed, has highlighted the rather ambiguous status of the former British colony under China’s policy of “one country, two systems.”
According to the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution enacted by the Chinese Parliament, Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy while the central government is responsible for defence and foreign affairs.
