The East, which had been imprisoned under the totalitarianisms of both Hitler and Stalin, would become like its former partner through the infusion of money. East German marks would immediately be converted to Deutsche marks; the grey and crumbling streets and buildings and schools would be replaced with their bright and modern Western versions.
