For, despite Mr Cameron's reassurances that he regards the defence of the realm as his primary duty, the storm clouds are still gathering over the Strategic Defence and Security Review. Mr Cameron hit the nail on the head when he observed: "We have got tanks that can roll into Russia, we have got too many aeroplanes ready for a dogfight with the Soviet Union, but we haven’t got enough helicopters for Afghanistan." Yet the issue of how to fix this has become the subject of an increasingly acrimonious political battle.
