In 1951, when Eva Peron tried to run for Argentina's vice-president with her husband Juan Peron contesting for president, the country was split vertically, with the army fuming at the possibility of the former radio singer-turned-working class heroine becoming president in the event of Juan's death and the unions choking the streets with the chants of "Now, Evita, now!" Finally, Evita was made the "spiritual leader of the nation" in 1952, just before she fell to cancer at 33. Since then South America has been craving for a new Evita.
