Burma's generals are a paranoid lot. Pamela Gutman, a scholar of Burmese history in Sydney, recalls visiting the late military supremo General Ne Win at his home in Rangoon for a dinner arranged by a mutual friend.
When she arrived at the appointed hour, a periscope popped up over the high wall and swivelled around to look her up and down before the gate was cautiously opened by the well-armed guards.
