Few of us have much conception of what a billion is: our brains, evolved on the savannahs of Pleistocene Africa, are not designed to reckon such numbers. Politicians rely on our confusion and, usually, they get away with it.
Thus, for example, Labour MPs, BBC presenters and Guardian columnists present the coalition’s welfare reforms as the end of social security: “the final solution to the poor”.
