Market Forces Make the World Greener

In mid-19th century Germany, merchants – using goose feathers dyed green to mimic pine needles – produced the world’s first artificial Christmas trees, a direct response to German deforestation. The merchants sold fake trees as a green alternative to natural trees. In doing so, they disproved again the persistent slur that the market can’t, by itself, induce environmental reform.
