The Christmas intermission is bringing down the curtain on the Vince Cable panto. Our politicians are rushing for the exit. By the time the Westminster audience returns from its seasonal break, the critics will be focused on the Coalition’s next act. The year ahead promises to be bruising – far more so than the events of this week, which have scarcely troubled the centre of Government and will quickly be overtaken by other plot twists. It may be a seasonal effect, but despite the turmoil outside, calm prevails in Downing Street.
