What Assad Is Really After

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad loves the oft-quoted dictum attributed to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that there can be no war without Egypt and no peace without Syria. In a January 2009 interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, he claimed this chestnut “is truer than ever.” Like his father before him, Assad certainly knows how to play the “peace” game, persuading the West to think that Syria is interested in serious talks while at the same time signaling to terror groups that his peace rhetoric is just for show.
