After several weeks of what was beginning to look like dangerous strategic paralysis, Western leaders appear to be finally gearing up to put a stop to Colonel Gaddafi. Whether this delay has been the consequence of a considered period of planning and preparation, or whether it was induced by the Damoclean legacy of Bush and Blair, this shift in tempo is to be welcomed.
With more than 1,000 Libyans reckoned dead, Gaddafi looks like being every bit as good as his word in his effort to “cleanse” Libya “house by house”. Reports emerging today suggest that leaders including British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama are now actively considering the implementation of no-fly zones, logistical and material assistance to Libyan protesters, and even strikes against pro-regime military targets.
