Economy Keeps Clegg, Cameron Tied

Britain's coalition government is one year old tomorrow and the only thing holding its fractious partners together is the scale of the economic crisis.

"Ruthless, calculating and very tribal," is how the Liberal Democrat business minister described his Conservative cabinet colleagues last week.

But the UK is borrowing about €450m every day to keep the country going. If the coalition collapsed, the money markets would take fright and do a Greece or an Ireland on the treasury.

So, like fugitives from the chain gang in a Hollywood epic, Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, are condemned to stay together for as long as it takes to get things straight.
