Shortly after the US midterm elections last year, I dined in Boston with a dozen newly elected “Right-wing nutters”. These members of the Tea Party wing of the Republican movement were envious that Britain had a new government that recognised the threat to prosperity from excessive public spending. They told me that they were going to use the US debt ceiling law to force the Obama administration to confront reality, too.
