In any event, we should all be truly thankful that Mr. Layton persevered. It’s reasonable to suspect we’d be looking at a much different House of Commons today, had he not. In non-traditional NDP ridings — and not just in Quebec — Mr. Layton himself was a massive part of the appeal. For fans of social justice, he had an unimpeachable record of advocacy. For protest voters, he had an unthreatening ring of reasonableness.
