Every evening TV viewers see grainy mobile phone footage of Syrian armoured vehicles gunning down demonstrators or leather jacketed thugs from the security police dragging people into vans who then disappear in the regime's ghastly prisons.
According to the UN, around 3,500 people are thought to have been killed since trouble began last March. A country of 21 million people, 75% Sunni, 10% Christian and 10% Shia.
