Even the loan crisis that has sent shock waves all through the eurozone has not alleviated the European Union’s hesitancy regarding Turkey’s membership. Sarkozy reiterated his oft-repeated view that Turkey does not belong to Europe. Stressing Turkey’s major role in world politics, Sarkozy said, as if Turkey’s membership to the EU were solely its decision: “The role of a bridge between the East and the West is important. Will Turkey abandon this role by being a member only to one side? This is a weak possibility.” |
