What on earth did David Cameron think he would achieve by going to Berlin on Thursday and lecturing the Chancellor of Germany on how to save the euro? Mrs Merkel knows exactly what she would have to do: and she also knows it is politically impossible to do it. Saving the single currency in its present form entails sharing the debt of eurozone countries among all 17 of them, with rich countries such as Germany underwriting debt from profligate ones like Greece or Spain.
