The BBC can hardly be blamed if it does not offer many positive accounts of the British economy at the moment. Mired as we are in recession, there is little to crow about, and much to criticise in government economic policy. But Stephanie Flanders and some of her colleagues went badly wrong in commenting so negatively on last week’s figures. For the past five or six months, the Government’s record on employment has been much better than almost anyone predicted — and a good deal of the credit should go to Mr Duncan Smith.
