In other parts of the world, separatist movements are usually violent - Kashmir, Sri Lanka, the various Kurdish revolts - and they sometimes succeed (South Sudan, Eritrea, East Timor). Whereas in the prosperous, democratic countries of the West, they are generally peaceful, frivolous and unsuccessful.
