That there are cretins on all sides of the constitutional debate is not in doubt. A passionate argument does not have to be a stupid debate, however. It would be cheering – and perhaps, alas, surprising – if it were conducted with a little less sneering contempt on all sides. This will still be a small country once the hurly-burly's done and we will still have to live with one another, whatever the result. There are times when that seems a pretty dreich thought but there it is.
