So dawned a new era in China: machines, waterlogged, were awake on a network collectively, universally referred to as the Internet of Things. The term conjures up an image of something vast; something shadowy that clicks and whirs of its own will, when your back’s turned. But the Internet of Things, at its core, is less creepy. The concept of sensors, objects and devices linked together by wireless protocols dates back to the ‘60s.
