Egypt was the only place, one Cairo wit pointed out recently, that could be brought to a halt by traffic jams even after it had run out of money to buy petrol. So when the country’s military announced on Monday that it intended to publish its own “road map” for the country’s future, it triggered the Egyptian equivalent of a wry smile: fireworks, general hilarity and a mad rush to Tahrir Square for all-night cheering and backslapping.
