With the electoral triumph of Japan's nationalist prime minister Shinzo Abe and China's aggressive effort to wrest control of the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands from Japan, relations have reached a new level of tension. Amidst a cat-and-mouse game of air and naval surveillance patrols, the risks of an accidental shooting match have increased. The growing tension also opens diplomatic space for India, an important economic partner that is being wooed by both feuding nations.
