A Cautious Celebration in Burma

Aug. 8 is the 25-year anniversary of the 8888 Uprising in Burma, which marked the beginning of Aung Sang Suu Kyi’s political career. The state violence that followed caused many Burmese dissidents to flee to countries like Canada. Many of the young students who made their way out in the fall of 1988 have spent more than half their lives fighting from afar, holding conferences and demonstrations, lobbying politicians, pleading with international governments to keep the pressure on Burma’s tyrannical regime. Now, with the government seemingly on the path to democratic reform, some of those exiles are starting to go back.
