Churchill, when young, had no qualms about pressing his mother to influence his postings “to places where I could gain experience and derive advantage”. During my seven years in the Scots Guards, I tried to keep pretty quiet about my family heritage, as I did about my father’s military career (Maj Gen Ken Perkins was possibly the most decorated soldier of his day). But I learnt as a boy how my great-grandfather repaid loyalty and support.
