The cruelty of Assad against his own population has been steadily escalating in conformity with his view that there would be no retaliation from the West. Until now, his view was correct. But he should not yet abandon it entirely. A close reading, insofar as it is possible, of Obama’s intentions reveals that what we are about to witness is not a renunciation of his previous policy on Syria. The realists should relax, and ride out the passing interventionist unpleasantness.
