In the pages of L’Action Catholique and Le Devoir, Jews were frequently portrayed as communists and parasites — a view shared by Quebec premier Maurice Duplessis and members of his Union Nationale party, as well as Montreal’s English-speaking community. The hiring of a Jewish doctor at Notre Dame Hospital in 1934 led to a strike by French-Canadian interns.
