Are we back to 1956? Back then the US and the Soviet Union blocked France and Britain in their adventurous Suez expedition. Today the world once again seems to revolve around Washington and Moscow. Of course, things have changed. In the 1950s Europe was the battleground for the cold war. Now, more than two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Russia is a weak ex-empire and the US is in retreat as the strategic value of Europe to Washington declines.
