Politics,’ Ronald Reagan once remarked, ‘is just like showbusiness. You have a hell of an opening, coast for a while, and then have a hell of a close.’ As a Hollywood film star who had risen to become President of the United States, Reagan was poking fun at himself. But as the past few days have reminded us, the lines between politics and showbusiness have become dangerously blurred — and the losers are likely to be the British people.
