The idea that Russia is caught in a “demographic death spiral” has considerable staying power. Just over the past month there have been high-profile analyses proclaiming that Russia is imploding and rapidly transforming into a Muslim-dominated society. In the past, other publications have been similarly alarmist in their description of Russian demographic trends. While Russian demography isn’t the world’s most popular topic, the establishment position is that the country is circling the drain and that there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.
