An opinion poll that put the Tories three points ahead of Labour was greeted with the kind of ecstasy that would once have been appropriate for a 20-point lead. And even this supposedly splendid result meant that the Conservatives were supported by only 32 per cent of the electorate – which would have been regarded as a loser’s score in most pre-election periods.
